Last year, I perused real estate listings for months in anticipation of our move to North Carolina. After seeing hundreds of available homes online, I decided new construction was the way to go. Since we had renovated our entire home in Pennsylvania piece by piece, I wanted the chance to start from scratch– we wanted to choose the lot, layout, flooring, tile, granite, EVERYTHING ourselves. While there have certainly been some pitfalls along the way (and let me tell you, choosing everything for your home in just three sessions is daunting) overall the freedom of moving into a home where we tailored most of it to our family’s unique needs feels pretty good.
If you do ONE thing when choosing your design elements, let it be this: know your style! After spending what felt like years browsing magazines, books, Pinterest, blogs and Instagram I noticed several similarities that always drew me in– and that helped define the look for our new home.
That style turned into a single phrase. I need to trust you won’t think I’m nuts when I say it out loud. I promise I didn’t write a bunch of words on cards, throw them in a bucket, and pull a few out randomly and paste them together.
